Curriculum: Grade 7, Environmental Science

Mr. Chad Solomon

Welcome to Whitney Young! For the first course in science, you will be taking Environmental Science. Environmental Science is a laboratory course that will interest and challenge the high ability student. We intend to establish a solid foundation in laboratory science which will be of value to all students as they progress in their academic careers.

The general objectives of the course are for the student to:

    • Learn how to work in a laboratory situation and to develop skills
    • Practice and develop problem solving skills
    • Develop skills in spoken and written communication
    • Apply mathematics to experimental results
    • Correlate abstract ideas with concrete results
    • Work cooperatively in sharing data and solving problems
    • Critically observe environmental systems
    • Think analytically and apply concepts to the solution of environmental problems
    • Promote educational experiences focusing on science and technology and their interaction with people and the environment

A textbook will be issued to each student. It will incorporate laboratory experiments with the reading. Aspects of environmental science will be covered through the use of Science World magazine. Grades will be based on laboratory experiments, problems, quizzes, tests, presentations, and class work and homework. Late work will NOT be accepted.

Credit will be issued when the student completes the full year of study with a grade of "C" or better. Students achieving less than the 70% mark will be warned early to enable them to bring up their grade to a passing level. We do our best to ensure the success for all students. We will expect that each student will also work hard to achieve this goal.
